Regional Geologic, Geochemical, Geophysical, and Mineral Deposit Data for Economic Development in Alaska in the 21st Century

Southwest Alaska

Much of the geology of southwestern Alaska is known only at a reconnaissance scale. This is particularly true of the central part of this region, where much of what is known comes from expeditions made sixty or more years ago. The Taylor Mountains 1:250,000-scale quadrangle is one of the areas where basic information is particularly scarce, but that is not surprising, given its difficult logistical access. Based on the quadrangle's known mineral prospects and knowledge of its basic geologic framework, the region is thought to have a high potential for additional undiscovered mineral resources. Collection of new geologic, geochemical, and geophysical information will help the USGS outline areas of highest mineral potential and will assist in land planning for both government and private holdings (including Alaska Native lands).
