Environmental Behavior of Mineral Deposits

Mineral District, Virginia

USGS mine drainage activities are currently concentrated in two areas in the Mineral District: the abandoned Valzinco Mine at the northern end of the district, and along Contrary Creek. The Valzinco Mine is in the Knight's Branch watershed north of Lake Anna. Effluent from several abandoned mines, including the Sulfur, the Boyd-Smith, and the Arminius, enter Contrary Creek, which flows into Lake Anna to the North.
